The Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Public Service Transformation Office, Mr. Jola Oyeneye, has revealed that Coaching and Mentoring plays vital role in enhancing skills and performance of traffic managers.
He disclosed this in his lecture titled “Coaching and Mentoring in Traffic Management” at the 20th Anniversary and 10th annual TRACE Commanders’ Conference/Retreat with the theme: “Building Resilient Leadership and Management Models for Traffic Personnel and Managers in Ogun, State,” at the Valley View Auditorium, Isale-Igbein, Abeokuta.
Oyeneye explained that Coaching and Mentoring were powerful tools in the workplace that contributes to the empowerment of employees, adding that mentees in particular, reap significant benefits that would enhance confidence and interpersonal skills. He added that dynamic relationship substantially improves individual performance, implementing, coaching and mentoring establishes a hands-on training programme for new employees, aiding them in comprehending job expectations. He explained that, rather than putting a new employee directly into a position, providing a support system and an interactive learning environment through professional coaching and mentoring would foster on-the-job confidence.
The Permanent Secretary, while Speaking on the benefits of Coaching and Mentoring said it includes improved decision – making and problem solving, enhanced leadership and communication skills, increased confidence and job satisfaction and improved team performance as well as collaboration.
Also, the guest lecturer, from the National Institute for Policy and Strategies Studies, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, School of Governance Studies, Ago-iwoye, Prof. Sola Adeyanju, in his lecture titled:” Building Resilient Leadership and Management Models for Traffic Personnel and Managers in Ogun State’’, said resilient leader should be able to encourage subordinate to develop emotional intelligence and empathy to manage their team, saying Leaders should equip subordinates with problem solving skills and adaptability to navigate complex traffic challenges.
Prof. Adeyanju added that adoption of the technology innovation would enhance desired effective traffic management across the corridors in the State, thereby reducing the challenges been experienced in traffic system.
Earlier, the Commander General and Chief Executive Officer, Commander ‘Seni Ogunyemi, said the efforts of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) are yielding positive results, as the number of crashes and deaths recorded had decreased tremendously.
‘’The Agency over the years has exposed its operatives and officers to different levels and categories of training and retraining for human capital development geared towards professionalism as well as been abreast of contemporary traffic management techniques for effective service delivery,’’ he said.
The TRACE boss added that the Agency had lined up quite a number of seasoned, highly cerebral and erudite scholars with a great reservoir of knowledge, expertise and experience in road traffic administration and management to deliver papers at the retreat, assuring the people that the Agency would continue to strive harder and intensify more efforts on its 24 hours service delivery initiatives to ensure utmost safety on the roads.
One of the participants, Area Commander, Operation and General Duties, Commander Teslim Adedeji, appreciated the organiser of the event for the educative and impactful workshop which would be useful in their traffic duties.
